Putin names new governor of restive Russian region hit by protests

MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin named a new acting governor to head Russia’s Far Eastern region of Khabarovsk on Monday after the previous regional head was arrested on murder charges, sparking a wave of protests.
At
least 10,000 people demonstrated in Khabarovsk on Saturday to demand
Moscow release Sergei Furgal, a member of the ultra-nationalist Liberal
Democratic Party (LDPR) who won election in 2018 after beating a rival
from the ruling pro-Putin party.
Furgal, born in Russia’s Far East,
was detained on July 9 and flown to Moscow to face charges over the
murder and attempted murder of multiple businessmen 15 years ago. He
denies wrongdoing.
Protests broke out soon afterwards and have continued for over a week. Their size is unusual for Russia’s regions, as is the fact that the authorities have not yet moved to break them up.
Putin on Monday formally removed Furgal from his post and appointed Mikhail Degtyaryov, 39, a lawmaker and also an LDPR member, to take over as the acting head of the region, according to a decree published on the Kremlin website.
The Kremlin has so far publicly played down the protests which have highlighted anger among some in the Far East over what they see as policies emanating from detached federal authorities located in Moscow seven time zones to the west.
The unrest also comes less than three weeks after Russians voted to back a set of sweeping reforms clearing the way for Putin to run for two more presidential terms, potentially remaining in the Kremlin until 2036 rather than stepping down in 2024.
Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, whose allies in the region have backed the demonstrations, cast Degtyaryov as a detached Kremlin appointee whose selection he predicted would fail to appease protesters.
Khabarovsk will hold regional elections to choose a fully-fledged new governor in September next year, Russia’s election commission said.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s president on Monday appointed an acting governor to the Far Eastern Khabarovsk region, where tens of thousands have been protesting against the arrest of the popular incumbent on charges of involvement in multiple murders.

Vladimir Putin signed a decree dismissing Sergei Furgal, who had run the region since 2018 and was arrested on July 9, and appointing lawmaker Mikhail Degtyaryov as acting governor. Speaking to Putin in a video conference, Degtyaryov thanked him “for the trust” and said he was prepared to fly out to Khabarovsk, a city 3,800 miles east of Moscow, immediately.
Furgal, Degtyaryov’s predecessor, is suspected of involvement in several murders of businessmen in 2004 and 2005. He was flown to Moscow and placed in custody for two months pending investigation and potential trial.
Furgal has denied the charges, which relate to his time as a businessman importing goods including timber and metals. His arrest sparked week-long protests in Khabarovsk, with the two biggest rallies attracting tens of thousands, as people grew increasingly frustrated with the Kremlin’s policy.
A member of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, Furgal was elected governor in 2018, defeating the Kremlin-backed incumbent. His victory was unexpected: Furgal didn’t actively campaign and toed the Kremlin’s line, publicly supporting his rival.
People voted for him nonetheless, delivering a humiliating blow to the main Kremlin party, United Russia, that has been losing seats in regional governments over the past two years. Degtyaryov, 39, is also a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. He has served as a lawmaker in Russia’s parliament since 2011. Commentators see his appointment as an attempt to quell the protests.
“He is a good communicator and a rather charismatic character. His membership in the Liberal Democratic Party also speaks in his favor. People may perceive his appointment as evidence that the Kremlin takes their opinion into consideration,” political analyst Abbas Gallyamov said in a Facebook post.

have to resort to its old fashion East West former politics with its

US/West have
to tactically separate this, as it has nothing to do with the Russians

Despotic
Putin misunderstood Russian Dynamism & could face disgraceful
humiliation/forced Exit.As he has technically only one term PM left and
Medvedev has one term Presidency, whether Putin is a strong KGB Boss or
not, or whether you can force with threat or not,the truth will confront
him badly and he will loose to Russia as Russia has great history where
in past strong kings were overthrew and forced into exile.
Since,
Russians belongs to European Stocks, which bears the known cradles of
modern civilization, despite its Communism or Socialist background and
definitely the Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin whose political
attempts to despotically impose himself as a self acclaimed KGB Strong
man with his foisted Russian State Duma and Moscow Kremlin cow,
intimidate, maneuver and manipulate Russians into submission as to run
and rule Russia for 3rd and 4th Russian President, will lead him to
bloody confrontation and disgraceful humiliation.
Russia was
known to be ruled by exploitative Emperors/Kings during red capitalism
in past, but Russians used Communism or Socialism as running point to
drove away their Emperors/Kings to exile, and any attempt to draw Russia
back to one man feudalism, will backfire with dire consequences.
The World and Russians should use Media and Advice to counsel Putin to toe the right path of modernism and not to return Russia to ugly past of feudalism or Autocrat Capitalism.
